The Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) is now accepting applications for one (1) Post-doctoral fellow to be funded by the HSCI’s NIH Training Grant.
Training Grant appointments cover the following costs:
• Stipend (amount determined by NIH guidelines)
• Travel support to attend one major conference per year
• Some training-related expenses (as determined by HSCI) and health insurance
Eligible applicants must already be working under an HSCI-affiliated PI at the time of application. During their appointments, trainees will work in the lab of an HSCI Principal Investigator and will have a team of mentors to guide their work. The trainee’s primary mentor will be determined by the HSCI-affiliated lab in which they conduct their research. Other mentors may be assigned by the Training Grant Committee.
Post-doctoral Eligibility Requirements:
• Applicants must already be working in an HSCI-affiliated lab in order to apply for this opportunity.
• A Post-doctoral applicant who has received Kirschstein-NRSA support in the past is not eligible if he/she has received more than two (2) years of support.
• Post-doctoral applicants must hold a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or comparable doctorate degree (such as DO or DVM) from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution by the beginning of the appointment (anticipated start date will be July 1, 2012). Prior research is highly preferred, although some exceptions, especially in the case of medical candidates, may be made.
• Applicants must be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible for Kirschstein-NRSA support.
• Applicants’ proposed work, if utilizing human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), must use federally recognized and approved lines only.
Appointed post-doctoral trainees will be responsible for completing the following during their training grant term:
1. Develop a training plan, along with at least three mentors (PI Mentor and Thesis Committee)
2. Work on the training plan and research in the lab of their PI Mentor
3. Create a final research project
4. Receive instruction on Responsible Conduct of Research and training in the research of Human Subjects.
5. Complete the HSCI “Topics in Stem Cell Science” seminar
6. Attend HSCI-hosted events and talks
7. Supervise an undergraduate student, graduate student or research technician
8. Participate in educational research-related activities
9. Attend one major stem cell conference per year of appointment
10. Give an oral presentation of work annually at an HSCI Training Grant forum
11. Participate in career development opportunities (speaking and poster opportunities, career development courses)
12. Optional: All trainees are also encouraged to conduct original and significant research and publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals; and actively participate in school-age (secondary) education opportunities
All trainees are encouraged to conduct original and significant research and publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals. All trainees are also encouraged to actively participate in school-age education opportunities around the Boston area, such as granting interviews to students for school projects, responding to questions from the public regarding their science, and/or being shadowed by students and teachers.
