Interns have the option of choosing on-or-off-campus housing for the duration of the program. Applicants selected for this program should be aware that housing costs are particularly steep in the greater Boston area. Housing in Cambridge, rather than the Longwood Medical Area, is recommended for its centrality to all of the affiliated research laboratories, its ease of access to the MBTA subway (Boston's public transportation) and free Harvard shuttle bus service (the 'M2') to the Longwood Medical Area. Harvard Square is a hub of activity in the summer and full of other undergraduate researchers!
On-campus housing will be provided, at cost (~$3500 for the ten weeks) at a Harvard house TBA. Single rooms (some doubles) in suites are available to all. HSCI provides rental fans (air conditioning is not available) and microfridges (kitchen facilities are not available).
Interns may also secure housing on their own through sub-lets and other options.
**Through Harvard Housing (preferred route)
The program administrator is generally able to secure notices of sublet opportunities from Harvard graduate students who vacate their Cambridge apartments for the summer. These will be shared with the selected interns as they are received in the spring. These sublets have worked out very well for the interns who have used them. Through third party vendors (we cannot vouch for these organizations or their listings)
Previous interns have found housing through PadMapper, Zumper, and Craigslist (be VERY cautious about Craigslist rentals!). Another option is ApartmentList.com.
