Harvard Stem Cell Institute NIH Training Grant Call for Graduate Student Trainee Applications

Overview: The Harvard Stem Cell Institute is now accepting applications for one (1) graduate student fellow position to be funded by the HSCI NIH Training Grant.

Training Grant appointments cover trainee:

• Stipend
• 60% of tuition, fees and insurance
• Travel support to attend one major conference per year
• Other training-related expenses

Trainees will work in the lab of a specific PI, their Primary Mentor, and have a team of mentors to guide their work. Students must choose a PI/Primary Mentor from the list of HSCI Principal Faculty. Other mentors will be assigned by the Training Grant Committee.

Graduate Student Eligibility: Candidates must have received their baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution by the beginning of their appointment date* and be enrolled in a Harvard University graduate program that will lead to a PhD in science. They must fulfill the requirements of the graduate program in which they are enrolled.

*For 2011 trainees, the anticipated appointment start date is July 1, 2011. Appointments are for a minimum of one year with an expectation of two.

Additional NIH Eligibility Requirements:

• Candidates must hold a permanent visa or possess U.S. citizenship
• Candidates’ proposed work, if utilizing human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), must use federally recognized and approved lines only.

Appointed graduate student trainees will be responsible for completing the following during their training term:

• Developing a training plan, along with three mentors
• Participating in HSCI Disease Programs
• Working on their training plan in the lab of their PI mentor
• Creating a final research project
• Receiving instruction on Responsible Conduct of Research
• Attending and contributing to the Harvard Dept. of Stem Cell & Regenerative Biology (SCRB) “Concepts in Stem Cell Biology” Course
• Completing three additional courses in stem cell and regenerative biology, with a strong recommendation that one be a non-scientific course, and that one be taught through the SCRB
• Attending one major stem cell conference per year
• Participating in educational research activities (lab meetings, seminar series, etc.)
• Presenting work at the HSCI Training Program Symposium
• Participating in career development opportunities
• Participating in secondary school outreach/education opportunities

All trainees are encouraged to conduct original and significant research and publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals.

Please have 2 letters of recommendation submitted. One letter must be from the PI/Primary Mentor/HSCI Principal Faculty member in whose lab the applicant will conduct their research. Recommendations may be uploaded directly with your application.
