Apply for the 2011 HSCI Internship Program

December 17, 2010

Program Dates
Monday, June 6 – Friday, August 12, 2011

Location
Cambridge and Boston, MA – Harvard University and the 11 Harvard-affiliated hospitals and research centers

Program Goals
The goal of the HSCI Internship Program (HIP) is to provide undergraduate students with a focused and challenging summer research experience in a cutting-edge stem cell science laboratory, and to expose them to different professional options within the scientific arena. This is accomplished through a stem cell seminar series, a career pathways presentation, and a weekly stem cell companion course. Interns will present their summer research findings, both orally and in poster format, at the HIP Symposium - a requirement of all program participants.

This program represents an exciting opportunity for undergraduates to gain hands-on experience in stem cell research while working in a Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) laboratory under the supervision of an experienced researcher. Internships will be for a period of ten (10) weeks (or longer, by agreement with the mentor and Principal Investigator) during the summer of 2011. Interns are expected to work full time in the host laboratory for the duration of the internship, attend the weekly seminar and stem cell companion course, and will receive a stipend of $4,320.00. On-campus housing may be provided, at cost (~$2900 for the ten weeks), though students may also secure housing on their own through sub-lets and other options. After acceptance into the program, students will discuss specific project details with their mentor.

Eligibility

  • This program is open to Harvard undergraduates as well as undergraduates from colleges and universities across the US and internationally.
  • Applicants who will receive their baccalaureate degrees by September, 2011, are ineligible.
  • Foreign students are responsible for obtaining a valid student visa prior to the start of the program.
  • Some background in biological science is essential. This should preferably include (for applicants from Harvard) Harvard courses LS1A and LS1AB (for freshmen) and SCRB10, MCB52 and/or MCB54 (sophomores and juniors).
  • Previous research lab experience is highly desirable.
  • Applicants must express a strong interest in stem cell biology.
  • Students who have previously participated in the HSCI summer internship program and still meet the eligibility requirements may once again apply for a summer internship. Please note, however, that students may only repeat the program once. In addition, a new application must be submitted irrespective of previous participation.
